Bangalore: Their awareness about organ donation has saved at least five lives and given sight to two people. On the eve of World Kidney Day, a farmer's family from Ananthpur donated his organs after a city hospital declared him brain dead. Family of Ram Murthy (47), a native of Ananthpur and resident of Bellary readily agreed to donate their father's vital organs as they were aware about organ donation.
The procedure, which took about 3 days time after Murthy was declared brain dead at the Chinmaya Mission Hospital (CMH) was over around 2 am on Wednesday morning. Murthy's family was handed over the body, which was cremated on Wednesday evening in their native in Andhra Pradesh.
"Murthy, a farmer, suffered brain stroke last week while he was reading a newspaper. He was rushed to Bangalore from Bellary and brought to CMH. He underwent a surgery, but immediately suffered another stroke, which proved fatal. The doctors declared him brain dead and explained the family about organ donation.
As CMH is not empanelled with ZCCK for organ donation, Murthy was shifted to Manipal Hospital. A team of doctors harvested his kidneys, valves, corneas and liver, which have been transplanted amongst the patients on waiting list with ZCCK," said Jency Antony, ZCCK, Coordinator. 706 people are awaiting kidney in Karnataka and are on ZCCK's waiting list.
